Singapore squad will not 'park the bus' against Arsenal: Coach Sundram | Singapore Informer

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Select XI will not “park the bus” against Arsenal in the Barclays Asia Trophy on Wednesday (Jul 15), said head coach V Sundramoorthy.

He said in the press briefing on Tuesday that the players will aim to use their clashes against Premier League opposition as a learning experience that could help lift the sport in the country. The squad will try to adopt an attacking mindset despite the quality of their opponents, he added.

“We are not going to park the bus. We’re going to go out there and play entertaining football, but to be clever, and not give them time and space on the ball,” he said.

“The boys, tactically, must be ready to counter whatever dangers Arsenal is going to pose to us. We have gone through the drills in practice training and they are aware of how we are going to approach the game.”

The side will be led by national team captain Shahril Ishak and features 19 local players. Sundram said the entire squad is motivated to perform against stars they watch on television.

“The morale in the camp is great, they’re looking forward to having a good tournament and playing against great players,” he said. “They don’t need anymore more motivation. I hope the fans will come and support us. This means a lot, especially with a filled stadium, it will help Singapore football rise to the next level,” he said.

While the entire squad will be keen to impress in front of the likes of Arsene Wenger, Safuwan Baharudin perhaps has the most to prove. The defender has yet to sign with a club after a short injury-affected spell with A-League side Melbourne City.
