by Bertha Henson SO WE want the National Day Parade (NDP) to move back to the National Stadium next year – and it’s going to cost us an arm or a leg. Why is anyone even surprised that the people behind the Sports Hub is going to charge for the use of the 55,000-seat stadium? The $1.33 billion Singapore Sports Hub is a public-private partnership between Sport Singapore (formerly the Singapore Sports Council) and Singapore Sports Hub, a consortium of companies that runs the 35 ha facility. Yup, there are some private sector people involved. There are various accounts on how much the Sports Hub wants to charge the NDP organizer, which is the Ministry of Defence (Mindef). It seems that the Sports Hub is obliged under its contract to offer the G use of the National Stadium for free for the NDP and rehearsals, as well as major sports events such as the SEA Games. But there’s a time limit. Going by news reports, it looks like 45 days for free use and another 35 days at a price. ST said that price was $26 million at the start of negotiations and has been bargained down to $10 million. But that, apparently, is what it costs to stage the NDP every year! According to TODAY, NDP would require the use of several venues and sites at the Sports Hub including the 55,000-seater National Stadium, OCBC Arena, OCBC Aquatic Centre, Water Sports Centre, carpark, and community facilities. This means that national sports associations will have to look for replacement training venues. What about community events or ticketed events during the run-up to the parade which includes the June school holidays? The Sports Hub…
