hei^e were 361 tin ore from Singkep is smelted in Singapore. The Sing-kep company produced 834 metric tons in 1914. Laterinformation is unavailable. The Coal Mines of Sumatra and Poeloe Laut Two coal mines are operated by the government, theOmbilin and the Poeloe Laut groups. The Ombilinmines are in Sumatra above Padang, on the west coast.The coal was discovered in 1868, and mining began in1892. The coal field is 9 x 10 km., the bed reachinga thickness of 23 m. Poeloe Laut is on the small islandof Poeloe Laut, lying off the southeast coast of Borneo.Mining began by private enterprise in 1903, but in 1913the government took over the work. The center of thecoal-mining operations is Stagen. In 1914 the produc-tion from the Ombilin mines was 443,141 metric tonsand from the Poeloe Laut mines 110,238 metric tons.
